Expect a record number of performances during the 3½-hour Grammy Awards, airing Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. At scattered points, trophies will be doled out.
“We’re trying to be an awards show that still has some awards in it,” says Ken Ehrlich, the show’s co-executive producer. Only a fraction of the prizes in 110 categories will be bestowed during the telecast, front-loaded with hot acts in rock, pop, country and especially hip-hop.
When Ehrlich surveyed the nominees, “I loved that there were so many fresh names and high-quality returning artists,” he says. “When it came time to lay out the show, there were some old favorites but also a lot of exciting people who’d never been on before, like Radiohead.”
