Umbrella “didn’t work” for Britney Spears· 15 Comments · News · |
Singer/songwriter Taio Cruz has confirmed that ‘Umbrella’ was offered to Mary J Blige and Britney Spears before Rihanna turned it into a worldwide hit.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Cruz said: “They [Spears's representatives] sent it back saying it didn’t work for her.”
Mary J Blige recently claimed she turned the track down because it was too mainstream.
Cruz, whose friend Christopher ‘Tricky’ Stewart co-wrote the song, attributed its success to the shrinking attention spans of music fans.
“The audience can be distracted quite easily, so you want something they can sing along with immediately,” he said.
“[It's] so simple, it’s like a playground chant. If you look at the most successful songs, they are choruses of four of five words, three notes, repeated. It’s not rocket science.”

He just mad he ain’t got a hit like that and probably never will, I hate bitterness there is no rocketscience behind the fact Rihanna works hard and knew that track was hers and she made it a worldwide hit and kept working and made her other songs hits too, he forgets she was out b4 umbrella! The difference between her and him is that shes an international star he is a minimal star out here in the UK at that, had he had the song it wouldn’t have been a worldwide hit.
Well who cares the song did well!!! GO RIHANNA!
Only Rihanna could have smashed that song. I couldn’t see “Umbrella” as Mary J. or Britney’s song. It fit Rihanna and her evolving sound and style, perfectly. It was a HUGE hit, so he should take back the “playground chant” remark. Sounds as if he’s downing the song. Yes, Rihanna did make the song BIGGER than it actually was! Cuz she got ‘dem skillz!
Very interesting article !
Haha, they shouldn’t turned down that song. That’s what they get lol.
Nice Site. I am new here but will be visiting more often as you have done a good job.
Thanks
nice job thank u
Let’s be honest, the song would have been a disaster had Britney Spears done it. Besides the fact that much of her talent has faded these recent years, the song simply doesn’t fit her.
thanks man
too bad
